To meet China's growing need for expanded health and fitness options, Bally Total Fitness (NYSE: BFT) today announced the opening of four new franchised facilities, making the company the largest fitness chain in China with sixteen franchised locations. The newest relationships have been developed through a long-standing joint venture with China Sport Industry. Each fitness center will offer consumers approximately 35,000 square feet of state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, as well as innovative group exercise classes such as kick-boxing, yoga, cycling and expert nutrition programming.
The new franchised facilities will be located in: The Asian Games Village in Beijing North, Sunny 100 within Beijing CBD, Changsha in the Hunan Province in Changsha City and Guangzhou Olympic Garden in the Guangzhou Panya District. This will give Bally Total Fitness eight franchised fitness centers in Beijing and a total of sixteen franchised clubs in China.
Between 1992 and 2002, the overall obesity rate in China has increased by 97% and more than 60 million people in the country have been labeled obese. Health officials blame diets too high in fat and a decrease in physical exercise.
"With approximately 23% of the Chinese population deemed overweight, there is tremendous demand for fitness centers such as Bally that provide state-of-the-art offerings and affordable pricing," said Ben Amante, Vice President, Franchising, Bally Total Fitness. "We're excited about the growing possibilities of the current franchise infrastructure that we have in place. Our growth and leadership position clearly indicates that the focus we have placed towards franchising in China over the last year is working."
