TORONTO - Dr. Sheela Basrur, the public health leader and voice of calm and reason during the 2003 SARS crisis, will receive an honorary degree from the University of Toronto.
Basrur died Monday after battling a rare form of cancer.
She will posthumously receive a doctor of science degree Friday in recognition of her contributions to medicine.
Basrur was Toronto's chief medical officer during the SARS outbreak that gripped the city five years ago.
Her calm and reassuring demeanour during the crisis eventually led her to become Ontario's chief medical health officer.
Basrur was a graduate of the university and also taught as a professor in the department of public health.
