Stem Cell Researcher Wins Award for Excellence for Work With the ImageStream(R) System

Posted on: Wednesday, 11 June 2008, 09:01 CDT

SEATTLE, June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The International Society for Analytical Cytometry has bestowed its President's Award for Excellence on Dr. Ewa Zuba-Surma in recognition of her work on the discovery and characterization of embryonic-like stem cells. Dr. Zuba-Surma works at the Stem Cell Biology Institute of the University of Louisville and has employed the Amnis ImageStream system extensively in her work.

"I am highly honored to have been awarded the ISAC President's Award for Excellence", commented Dr. Zuba-Surma. "Over the past two years, I have been working with Dr. Mariusz Z. Ratajczak at the University of Louisville on the characterization of the primitive Very Small Embryonic-Like (VSEL) stem cells isolated from murine and human adult organs and specimens. The ImageStream system has become one of the most valuable tools utilized in these studies and allows us not only to distinguish VSELs from cellular debris and artifacts but also to characterize their unique morphological features. I am very happy that my research was so highly recognized during the ISAC meeting by this prestigious award."

Dr. David Basiji, CEO of Amnis Corporation, added "We at Amnis have been extremely impressed with Dr. Zuba-Surma's scientific achievements. Her discovery of a novel stem cell population is both highly significant and strongly leverages the unique capabilities of the ImageStream system to image hundreds of thousands of cells directly in flow. We are very gratified to see that her work has been recognized by the International Society for Advancement of Cytometry. The ISAC President's Award for Excellence is granted to only one young investigator every two years and represents a high honor. Amnis congratulates Dr. Zuba-Surma and we eagerly anticipate her future work."

Amnis Corporation, headquartered in Seattle, WA, develops, manufactures and markets the ImageStream system for high speed imaging of cells in flow. The system generates over 100,000 high resolution cell images per minute with fluorescence sensitivity better than standard flow cytometry. The ImageStream is supported by the IDEAS(R) image analysis package, a highly sophisticated yet easy to use tool for processing hundreds of thousands of images at a time. The software package enables advanced research applications in hematology, immunology and oncology, and provides a critical foundation for the company's clinical applications development.
