Charlie Poole Music Festival Headlines Weekend

Jun. 12–It’s foot-stomping, toe-tapping, fiddle-playing, banjo-picking time here in Rockingham County. The 13th annual Charlie Poole Music Festival headlines this weekend’s activities.

The events start Friday afternoon with a special musical workshop for kids. Jim Vipperman, a youth specialist with the Junior Appalachian Musicians program, will give kids a special hands-on experience. An evening concert will follow Friday night, picking competitions for a $5,000 prize. The McPeak Brothers’ concert is scheduled for Saturday, and Sunday will feature a tour of historic Eden. The music will surely get your toes jumping.

Today

Farmers Market, 6 a.m.-1 p.m., also 6 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, municipal parking lot, Morehead Street, Reidsville. Presented by Reidsville Downtown Corp. Local produce, homemade jams and jellies and more. 349-1045.

Vision screening, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Eden Mall, East Meadow Road, Eden. Presented by Eden Evening Lions Club. N.C. Lions Foundation Vision Van will have free screenings including vision acuity test, a field vision test and pressure check. 548-9508.

Friday

Hands-On Musical Workshop, Charlie Poole Music Festival, Eden Fairgrounds, Oakland Avenue, Eden. Sponsored by the Rockingham County Arts Council. 4 p.m. for children in grades 1-6 grades, 5 p.m. for grades 7-12. Workshop with Jim Vipperman, with the Junior Appalachian Musicians program. Admission into the festival is free with a paying adult for children 15 and younger.

Saturday

Rockingham County Democratic Breakfast, 8 a.m., Cafe 99, 128 S. Scales St., Reidsville. Special guests include U.S. Rep. Brad Miller and N.C. Sen. Kay Hagan. Cost: $20 buffet breakfast. 427-2803.
