AACP Honors University of Connecticut Team for Outstanding Paper
Three faculty members and one graduate student from the University of Connecticut (UConn) School of Pharmacy will be awarded the 2008 AACP Rufus A. Lyman Award, honoring the best paper published in the American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education. The award will be presented at the 2008 American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) and Association of Faculties of Pharmacy of Canada (AFPC) Annual Meeting and Seminars Closing Banquet on Tuesday, July 22 at 7:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers in Chicago, Ill.
“Number and Impact of Published Scholarly Works by Pharmacy Practice Faculty Members at Accredited U.S. Colleges and Schools of Pharmacy (2001-2003)” was authored by Craig I. Coleman, Pharm.D., Eang Lao, Pharm.D., Lauren S. Schlesselman, Pharm.D. and C. Michael White, Pharm.D. The paper evaluates the quantity and quality of published literature conducted by pharmacy practice faculty members in U.S. colleges and schools of pharmacy for the years 2001 – 2003. It determines that their substantial contributions to biomedical literature have had important impacts in biomedical literature and pharmacy education.
Coleman is assistant professor of pharmacy practice at the UConn School of Pharmacy. His professional interests include the assessment of the clinical and pharmacoeconomic outcomes of cardiovascular drugs, including drugs used in the diagnosis and evaluation of coronary artery disease. He is the director of both the Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Studies Group, and the Inpatient and Outpatient Medication Assistance Programs, both at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn. In 2003, Coleman was the winner of the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and AstraZeneca Health Outcomes Research Award.
Schlesselman’s professional interests as director of assessment and assistant clinical professor of pharmacy practice at the UConn School of Pharmacy include the evaluation of student development and learning outcomes, development of Pharm.D. curriculum assessment tools, and active learning and self-learning models. She is the recipient of the Outstanding Young Pharmacist Award from the Georgia Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
White is professor of pharmacy practice at the UConn School of Pharmacy. He was awarded the Drug Therapy Research Award in 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2005 by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists, recognizing the best research publication by a pharmacist in that year. He was also named the Young Investigator of the Year in 2004 by the American College of Clinical Pharmacists. White’s professional interests include arrhythmia detection, prevention and treatment, and the impact of drugs, herbs and natural products on implantable cardiac devices and electrophysiology. His research on herbal drugs effects on the electrocardiogram and blood pressure was covered by CNN, national NBC affiliates and the BBC in 2004.
