Hospital Loses a Medical Leader
By Cathleen F. Crowley, Albany Times Union, N.Y.
Jun. 14--ALBANY -- Dr. William Conway Jr., a fixture at St. Peter's Hospital, died suddenly Wednesday night of an apparent heart attack.
"Bill was really the heart and soul of St. Peter's Hospital," said hospital President Steven Boyle, a former patient of Conway's. "He was a compassionate caregiver. He was a highly skilled physician with an expertise in infectious disease. He was a teacher, a problem solver, an advocate for patients and an advocate for physicians."
Conway also served as division physician for the New York State Police since 1991. Each Thursday, he met with police officials to review cases of injured troopers. He'd answer calls at any hour of the day, and he visited officers being treated at St. Peter's, said Martin Probst, director of personnel for the State Police.
"On a personal level, he was one of the most humble and compassionate people that I ever met," Probst said.
His jovial appearance reminded Dr. Alan Sanders of Santa Claus. "He was the most easy-going guy you'd ever want to meet," said Sanders, chief of infectious disease at St. Peter's.
Conway taught younger doctors with humor, patience and his vast library of clinical experiences, many of which had a funny twist.
Conway was named Physician of the Year in 2001 at St. Peter's. He was a native of Albany and graduate of Vincentian Institute. After his schooling and a military stint, he joined St. Peter's in 1974.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and sons William and Timothy. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. Teresa of Avila Church, Albany. Calling hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the McVeigh Funeral Home, 208 N. Allen Street, Albany. Cathleen F. Crowley can be reached at 454-5348, or by e-mail at [email protected]
