Posted on: Wednesday, 13 April 2005, 03:00 CDT

NOW IS THE time to begin planning for this year's National Public Health Week, which will be observed April 4-10.

The 2005 event, which focuses on healthy aging, has a theme of "Empowering Americans to Live Stronger, Longer." Sponsored by APHA, National Public Health Week will be celebrated across the country by health departments, schools, businesses, communities and organizations.

National Public Health Week 2005 will challenge people to "prevent, protect and plan," so that they can add more healthy years to their lives. During the week, APHA and its partners will teach Americans how to prevent health problems by practicing healthy living, protect their health through early detection and screening and plan their health management in a way that will promote a high quality of life in later years.

National Public Health Week activities typically include health fairs, art contests, legislative advocacy, health walks, proclamations and educational outreach. To tie in with this year's aging theme, organizers are encouraged to create activities that target people ages 65 and older as well as their families and other caregivers.

Organizers looking for ideas for their National Public Health Week events can download a free planner's guide and toolkit from the APHA Web site at .

After National Public Health Week has coneluded, participants are invited to submit details and photos of their week's events to The Nation's Health, which will be publishing highlights of activities held around the country in an upcoming issue.
