Event Aims to ‘Keep Kids Safe’

Jun. 17–A “Keep Kids Safe Day” is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 19 at the Leesburg Community Building, 109 E. Dixie Ave.
Activities will include personal child-identification cards, school sports physicals, vision and dental examinations, bicycle and helmet safety checks, car-seat safety checks, free hot dogs and soft drinks and more.
Advance registration is $5 per children and $3 for each additional sibling. Parents must show proof children are related for the discounted cost. Registration at the door is $10.

Fun at W.T. Bland Library
The summer fun begins this week with the W. T. Bland Public Library’s Summer Reading Program “Catch the Reading Bug.” The program continues through July 31.
Admission is free and open to all interested children. Register the day of the program.
Activities will include stories, crafts, books and door prizes.
Here’s the schedule:
*Wednesday, 2 p.m.: Creepy Crawly Capture Show, a live animal show with snakes, a baby alligator, cockroaches and more.
*Special Thursday performances, 2 p.m.: Jiggleman with a high-energy performance in the auditorium at Mount Dora High School, Highland Street. Food and beverages are not permitted.
*Kid Flicks summer movies at 2 p.m. Friday with free popcorn. Due to a licensing agreement, the library cannot publish the title of the movies, so parents can call the library and ask, 352-735-7180, Option 5.
Summer YMCA programs
*The Golden Triangle YMCA will offer summer day camp for children in kindergarten through eighth grade from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays on the campus of Christian Home & Bible School in Mount Dora.
Activities include archery, sports, games, character development, team building, arts and crafts, nature hikes, swimming and field trips. The registration fee is $35. The weekly cost is $95 for members and $165 for nonmembers.
*One-week soccer camps are offered for boys and girls ages 5 to 17 from June 23 to 27; June 30 to July 3; and July 28 to Aug. 1. Hours will be 9 a.m. to noon or 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. each week.
The weekly cost is $75 for members and $130 for nonmembers.
*Mad Science camps are offered for ages 6 to 12 at Christian Home & Bible School in Mount Dora.

Preparing for hurricanes
Talk about hurricanes with Dennis Decker, forecaster and meteorologist with National Weather Service, at the next meeting of the Harris Chain Sail & Power Squadron at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Eustis American Legion Hall, 101 S. Bay St.
Decker is the warning coordination meteorologist at the NWS forecast office in Melbourne.
Volunteers needed
*The City of Tavares Public Library is seeking volunteers 14 and older to help the library staff keep books and materials organized, read to younger library patrons, and interact with youngsters. To volunteer or for information, call Beth Sindler, 352-742-6090.
*The Lake Eustis Institute, a center for lifelong learning, is seeking volunteers to help with special events, such as distributing posters and schedules, setting up and breaking down for institute classes, workshops, etc. Volunteers may establish the amount of work hours at the institute, 127 N.
