DETROIT, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The fight against breast cancer received a big boost during the May 31st Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure(R) with the participation of 344 participants from the Binson's Home Health Care and Northwood, Inc. team.
For 26 years, the Komen Race for the Cure Series has been a celebration of life, hope and honor, giving a voice to millions of women and men and allowing survivors a powerful means to demonstrate to the world that breast cancer can be beaten. Detroit's Race, presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute, is a top-tier event in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure(R) series, the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world. This year's event had a crowd of 30,000 on more than 400 teams and 1,500 breast cancer survivors. More than 1.5 million participants took part in the signature awareness and fund raising event nationwide.
The team, the largest in the Detroit race among companies with up to 500 employees, took home the largest corporate team award in that category and the Outback Steakhouse "Grow Getters" award, which recognizes teams with the biggest proportional jump in membership in one year. Binson's and Northwood's team grew to 344 members this year from 122 members in 2007.
"We issued a challenge to our company to provide 250 participants in this important annual event," said Binson's President and CEO Jim Binson. "I'm proud to say that we overshot that number by almost 100.
"We have been proud partners with Karmanos Cancer Institute in raising awareness, research and treatment dollars for cancer patients and survivors for years. Their mission is directly in line with what we love to do most -- to help people live better lives," he said.
Binson's and Northwood, Inc. are longtime supporters of the Karmanos Cancer Institute, hosting annual events to benefit the Institute and participating in the Race for the Cure every year with team members, volunteers and sponsorships. This year, Binson's and Northwood, Inc. were sponsors of the Survivor Cafe, which provided refreshments and a resting place for the survivors participating in the race.
In addition to its annual participation in the Komen Detroit Race for the Cure, Binson's annually hosts a Chili Cook-Off and Survivor's Luncheon and Fashion Show to benefit Karmanos Cancer Institute. Binson's also hosts other events or helps support the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the Michigan Parkinson Foundation, Gilda's Club, Habitat for Humanity and other organizations.
