Conquering Cancer at the Heart of Relay for Life

By Jeremy Higgins, McAlester News-Capital, Okla.

Jun. 20--Almost everyone is affected by cancer -- whether you are a cancer survivor, or you have a friend or family member who has cancer, survived cancer or has died from cancer.

In conjunction with this year's Relay for Life, luminarias are being sold to honor those who have died from, have or have survived this deadly disease.

The luminarias, paper sacks lit with a candle inside, will be displayed along the walking track at Will Rogers Park June 27 during this year's relay. The relay is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and end at 7 a.m. June 28.

The luminarias can be purchased for $5 by calling Sharon Sloniker at 470-4580 or Karon Vaughan at 470-5467. A luminaria ceremony to remember those who have been lost to cancer or to honor those who have survived will take place at approximately 9:30 on the night of the Relay. The names of those being honored or remembered will be read during the ceremony. There will also be a booth set up before the ceremony for the luminarias to be decorated.

Also on the night of the Relay, a silent auction will be held at Sertoma Multipurpose Field. Some of the items up for grabs will be a colonoscopy and mammograms courtesy of McAlester Regional Health Center. In case of bad weather, the auction will be held at the new Boys & Girls Club facility just west of Main Street past South Avenue.

Teams of eight to 15 members gather with tents and sleeping bags to participate in the largest fundraising walk in the nation. The American Cancer Society Relay For Life unites friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools and churches, according to organizers. Teams seek sponsorship prior to the Relay, all with the goal of supporting a cure for cancer.
