Moving Up the Changing Face of Tucson’s Business
Immunobiology unit at UA has new leader
Janko Nikolich-Zugich, an internationally noted expert on the immune system and age-related disorders, is the new head of the department of immunobiology and co-director of the Arizona Center on Aging at the University of Arizona College of Medicine.
He receives National Institutes of Health funding for research on age-related susceptibility to the West Nile virus and immune defense against viruses.
Nikolich-Zugich previously worked for Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland. He received his medical, master's and doctoral degrees from Belgrade University Medical School.
3 executive changes made by Carondelet
Carondelet Health Network announced three executive changes:
* Dr. Douglas Spegman has been named senior vice president for clinical excellence and chief medical officer of the network. He replaces Dr. Jose Santiago, who accepted a new position with Carondelet's parent, Ascension Health.
Spegman worked for 10 years at El Rio Community Health Center as the associate medical director and division chief before joining Carondelet. At Carondelet, his previous jobs include chief of staff and medicine department chairman at St. Mary's Hospital.
* Dr. Amy Beiter has been named chief medical officer of St. Mary's Hospital. She was promoted from her job as medical director of utilization management at the hospital, where she has worked for 16 years.
She earned a medical degree from Indiana University and a bachelor's degree from Purdue University.
* Dr. Patrick Smith has been named chief medical officer of St. Joseph's Hospital. He was promoted from his job as medical director of utilization management at the hospital, where he is a past chief of staff and chief of surgery.
Smith earned a medical degree from the Creighton University School of Medicine.
