Girl in Smash Horror
A FOUR-year-old girl is in hospital today with broken bones after a crash which left a woman dead.
The woman, a 43-year-old from Northumberland, was driving a Mazda northbound on the A696, near Ponteland, when it collided with a lorry transporting a 40-ton load of felled timber.
The girl suffered a broken leg, spinal injures and arm fractures in the incident.
Police are trying to establish whether one of the vehicles veered on to the wrong side of the road, or other factors led to the smash.
