Doctor Takes on Cycle Ride to Say Thanks for Research

June 26, 2008

A CYCLING doctor will be among fundraisers pedalling for pounds.

Cancer research scientist Dr Andrew Sanders, 26, will be among the cyclists taking part in Cancer Research Wales’ annual sponsored bike ride, starting at the Pendragon Inn in Thornhill, Cardiff, on Sunday.

Cardiff University graduate Dr Sanders, whose work is based at the city’s University Hospital of Wales, was supported by Cancer Research Wales to undertake his PhD. The charity is also funding the next four years of his research into the prevention of malignant tumour growth.

Dr Sanders said: “I think most people have lost someone close to them to cancer, or know someone who has. My own uncle died of leukaemia a few years ago, which was part of the reason I decided to specialise in cancer research when I was studying biology at university. When someone dies of cancer it affects everyone who knew that person.”

The young scientist is taking part in the ride in an effort to thank the charity for its support.

The 26-mile bike ride will take in Lisvane, Marshfield, Cardiff Bay and parts of the Taff Trail, before cyclists return to the Pendragon Inn for a barbecue.

Anyone wanting to take part should call Liz Andrews on 029 2031 6976.
