K&R Law Group Panelists Reveal Tips for How to Work Effectively With California Health Plan Regulators
Posted on: Wednesday, 20 April 2005, 12:00 CDT
A panel of four attorneys who formerly worked for health care regulatory agencies in California shared a wide range of practical tips and useful information for how health care organizations can most effectively work with health plan regulators, at a unique luncheon seminar yesterday in Sacramento.
The program, "Decoding the DMHC: Reflections on Working with Health Plan Regulators," was an invitation-only event hosted by K&R Law Group LLP, a law firm with offices in Los Angeles and Sacramento that has one of the nation's largest groups of experienced attorneys fully dedicated to serving the health care industry.
The panelists offered insights to in-house counsel and health care lawyers from throughout Northern California on specific matters such as Department of Managed Health Care (DMHC) adjudication of provider disputes, obtaining positive results when plan members complain to the DMHC or request independent medical review, strategies in presenting a case to the enforcement division when served with an accusation, and influencing the drafting of regulations.
The host and moderator of the program was Gail Schubert, partner in charge of K&R Law Group's Sacramento office and former lead counsel for licensing full-service and behavioral health plans with the Department of Corporations. The panelists for the program were:
-- Jim Novello, senior counsel with K&R Law Group and former chief of enforcement for the DMHC;
-- Curtis Leavitt, senior counsel with K&R Law Group and former assistant chief counsel with the DMHC Office of Legal Services;
-- Carl Gardner, senior counsel with K&R Law Group and former attorney with the Department of Corporations' Health Plan Division.
K&R Law Group's Sacramento office, which opened in 1998, employs a total of six lawyers who have experience working for the State of California's health care regulatory agencies.
