Michigan Health & Hospital Association Elects 2008 Officers and Board Members, Bestows Awards
LANSING, Mich., June 27 /PRNewswire/ — Members of the Michigan Health & Hospital Association (MHA) elected new officers and board members during the association’s Annual Membership Meeting yesterday. Officers of the 2008 MHA Board of Trustees include Nancy M. Schlichting, chairwoman; Frank J. Sardone, chairman-elect; and Spencer Maidlow, treasurer. The board directs the Lansing-based association’s statewide representation of hospitals and health care providers.
Schlichting, president and chief executive officer, Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, will serve as chairwoman during the association’s 2008-2009 program year beginning July 1. The terms of service of Sardone, president/CEO, Bronson Healthcare Group, Inc., Kalamazoo, and Maidlow, president & CEO, Covenant Medical Center, Inc., Saginaw, will also span the 2008-2009 program year. Richard Breon, president and CEO, Spectrum Health, Grand Rapids, will serve as immediate past chairman.
Newly elected board members include James Bogan, president & CEO, Portage Health, Hancock; Vicki Chatland, president of the Michigan Association of Healthcare Advocates, MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland; Thomas DeFauw, president & CEO, Port Huron Hospital; Paul LaCasse, DO, president & CEO, Botsford Hospital, Farmington Hills; Patrick Murtha, chief executive officer, St. Joseph Health System, Tawas City; Dale Sowders, president & CEO, Holland Hospital; and Patrick Wardell, president & CEO, Hurley Medical Center, Flint.
Current MHA board members who were re-appointed to new terms of service are Brian Connolly, president & CEO, Oakwood Healthcare Inc., Dearborn; Gregory R. Lane, senior vice president & chief administrative officer, McLaren Health Care, Flint; Philip McCorkle Jr., president & CEO, Saint Mary’s Health Care, Grand Rapids; and Dennis Swan, president/CEO, Sparrow Hospital & Health System, Lansing.
Current MHA board members who will continue their terms of service are K. Douglas Deck, president & CEO, Munson Healthcare, Traverse City; Michael Duggan, president & CEO, Detroit Medical Center; William Jackson, president, Charlevoix Area Hospital; Kenneth Matzick, president & CEO, Beaumont Hospitals, Royal Oak; Lynn Orfgen, president & CEO, Crittenton Hospital Medical Center, Rochester; Richard Reynolds, president and chief executive officer, MidMichigan Health, Midland; Paul Spaude, president & CEO, Borgess Health, Kalamazoo; and Douglas Strong, director/CEO, University of Michigan Hospitals & Health Centers, Ann Arbor. In addition, Spencer Johnson continues to serve his term of office as president of the association.
The MHA also presented several awards during the meeting. The MHA Meritorious Service Award, the association’s highest honor, was presented to Ned Hughes Jr., president, Gerber Memorial Health Services, Fremont, and Joseph Wasserman, president and chief executive officer, Lakeland Regional Health System, St. Joseph. Receiving the MHA Special Recognition Award were state Rep. Kathy Angerer (D-Dundee) and Bill and Cynthia Schuette, who have been instrumental in the founding and ongoing efforts of the Michigan Harvest Gathering, a statewide campaign to feed the hungry. The MHA Ludwig Community Benefit Award is presented annually to health care organizations that demonstrate community benefit by collaborating with local organizations to improve the health and well-being of their communities through health care, economic or social initiatives. As resources to sustain and improve valuable community health improvement programs are often scarce, a $2,500 cash award is also presented from the MHA Health Foundation. The 2008 award was bestowed upon Henry Ford Health System, Detroit, for the School-Based and Community Health Program (SBCHP) and upon MidMichigan Medical Center-Midland for the Smile, Reach, Speech Stroke Campaign.
The MHA is a state association, based in Lansing that represents and supports Michigan hospitals, health systems and health care providers through education, advocacy and communication.
