Wellogic Congratulates MedVirginia on Leading Virginia to Be Selected for National Medicare Electronic Health Record Demonstration Project

Posted on: Friday, 27 June 2008, 12:03 CDT

Wellogic congratulates its client, MedVirginia, for its leadership in helping Virginia become selected to participate in a nationwide electronic health record (EHR) demonstration project. Leveraging its experience with envisioning, launching and operating a widely adopted system for community-wide clinical information exchange, MedVirginia submitted the winning application on Virginia's behalf to the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS).

The five-year project will provide incentive payments to physicians for using certified EHRs to improve the quality of patient care and is expected to improve the standard of care provided to an estimated 3.6 million Americans. Virginia, along with 11 other communities, was selected from more than 30 applicants for best demonstrating a commitment to all stakeholders, close ties to the medical community, existing or planned private sector initiatives related to health information technology and quality reporting, and adequate size to recruit a sufficient number of primary care physician practices. The project timeline for Virginia will begin in the summer of 2009.

MedVirginia is widely recognized for its dedication to raising the standard of care for patients in the greater Richmond area through the use of health information technology. With the launch of the Wellogic-built health information exchange (HIE) infrastructure, MedVirginia Solution(SM), in January 2006, MedVirginia was one of the first regional health information organizations (RHIOs) in the U.S. to become fully operational. The rollout of Wellogic's Release X upgrade enables MedVirginia to extend its capability to communicate seamlessly with other HIEs, to offer an enhanced provider solution that scales from a portal to a fully CCHIT certified EHR, and to leverage substantial new capabilities for consumers and care managers.

MedVirginia's CEO, Michael Matthews--named Virginia's "Community Convener" in February by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt--said he was honored and privileged to receive this recognition on behalf of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He added, "The evidence is too compelling and the stakes are too high to maintain status quo."

"CMS's selection of Virginia to participate in this project indicates just how focused the Commonwealth's medical community is on improving healthcare," said Sumit Nagpal, President and CEO of Wellogic. "Since 2005, we have had the privilege of partnering with MedVirginia to achieve our common goal of improved care quality, safety, and efficiency through semantic interoperability. MedVirginia has been visionary in adopting our flexible architecture to establish a foundation for health information exchange that enables knowledge activation at the point of care. MedVirginia is a true leader in our industry and the groundbreaking progress that we have made together in the past four years speaks volumes about the transformations that are yet to come."
