Patient Dies After Ambulance Crash

A Patient being taken to hospital for emergency treatment died after the ambulance they were travelling in was involved in a crash.

The emergency services vehicle was taking the casualty to Scunthorpe General Hospital when it was in collision with a silver Ford Fiesta.

A second ambulance had to be sent to pick up the patient and go on to the hospital but the casualty had died by the time they arrived.

The crash happened on Gainsborough Road, Scotter, at around 3.40pm yesterday.

The ambulance crew and the driver of the Ford Fiesta both suffered minor injuries.

Police closed the road and began conducting an investigation.

An East Midlands Ambulance spokesman said: "East Midlands Ambulance Service can confirm that an emergency vehicle was involved in a road traffic collision in the village of Scotter.

"Back-up crews were immediately sent to assist and the patient was taken to Scunthorpe General Hospital.

"Unfortunately, on arrival, the patient was pronounced dead.

"At this stage, the cause of death is not known.

"Until the police investigation is concluded, it is not appropriate for us to comment further."

The spokesman would not confirm if the patient was male or female or the reason why they were in the ambulance at the time.

No further details were available at the time of going to press.
