Forest Laboratories said new studies indicate Campra, its anti- alcoholism drug, is safe even when used by people taking other medications such as anti-depressants and analgesics.
The firm, which is based in Manhattan but has major operations on Long Island, said new studies indicate Campra, its FDA approved treatment for alcoholism, is well tolerated in long-term treatment of alcoholism, even among those taking other drugs.
Dr. Richard N. Rosenthal, a researcher and professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, said the data are important in terms of long-term use.
He said they indicate that Campra, or acamprosate calcium, doesn't lead to dangerous side effects when taken in conjunction with other medicines.
The two studies were presented April 15 in Dallas at the American Society of Addiction Medicine Conference.
