Jul. 1–STOCKTON — Construction of St. Joseph’s Medical Center’s 78-bed Patient Pavilion at California Street and Harding Way is moving along as scheduled, with completion set for spring 2010.

A 200-foot crane moved in Monday night to place large air handlers for the four-level, 152,000-square-foot hospital addition that will cost approximately $115 million, one of the most expensive privately funded construction projects ever undertaken in Stockton.

An air handler is a large, metal, box-like device used to condition and circulate air as part of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems.

Upon completion, the Catholic Healthcare West-owned hospital will operate with 374 beds, maintaining its place as the largest hospital in San Joaquin County.

The new construction will house a Women & Children’s Center with a maternity unit, as well as neonatal and adult intensive care units. All rooms will be private, among the latest trends in hospital construction.

Construction costs have risen $7.5 million since ground was broken last July due to increases in such materials as copper, concrete and steel, resulting in the hospital’s spending more than $1.5 million per bed. The industry standard is around $1 million, but California has among the most stringent hospital construction requirements nationwide, including tough new seismic safety standards.

One rebuilding project in the Bay Area — Mountain View’s El Camino Hospital — reportedly is costing $1.9 million per bed.
