China to advance national "patriotic health campaign"

BEIJING, April 22 (Xinhua) -- China will push forward its nationwide "patriotic health campaign," a program so as to improve public hygiene and personal health, according to a televised national conference held Friday.

The most common improvements endorsed are keeping the workplaces and homes clean and tidy and poisoning cockroaches and rats and spraying pesticides in places that breeds mosquitoes and flies.

"The campaign must be constantly advanced to new heights to meet the goals of building a relatively affluent society in an all- round way," State Councilor Hua Jianmin said at the conference.

The television and telephone conference urged all localities and departments to promote the campaign and incorporate it in the development of the public health system.

The conference urges further health education targeting all residents, promoting healthy and civilized life styles and fostering a sound social atmosphere that values personal hygiene.

Moreover, it lists the substantial efforts to improve the health conditions in rural areas as a priority of the campaign, acknowledging that health facilities and hygiene and health awareness of rural farmers need to be improved.
