Event Set Monday to Help Families Stay Healthy
How regular exercise helps a family stay in shape together is the focus of “Healthy Living Classes — Fun Family Fitness” sponsored by the SouthCrest Wellness and Sports Medicine Center.
The event is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Union Multipurpose Activity Center, 6836 S. Mingo Road.
Presented by SouthCrest pediatrician Dr. Scott Cyrus, the class focuses on the family.
“You don’t need a personal trainer to have fun,” Cyrus said.
“It’s a time to have fun and get to know your kids. You’re going to build memories because you gave your child your time.”
The evening event will include a lecture and John Taylor of the SouthCrest Wellness and Sports Medicine Center will present a family obstacle course.
Cyrus will discuss that with the rapidly rising rates in childhood obesity, it is more important than ever to teach children fun ways to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle.
He will stress that getting cardiovascular exercise is as easy as playing tag or catching a Frisbee in the yard. The parks in Tulsa also offer many opportunities for exercise.
Other exercise opportunities include walking, playing golf, jogging, riding a bicycle or rollerblading.
“Fitness is an important part of our lives. Diet is not just the only answer. If you can make it fun, it can be a consistent part of our lives,” Cyrus said.
Cyrus suggests exercising 20 to 30 minutes three or four times a week.
