A new study has revealed that the private sector accounted for the major share in the development of the pharmaceutical science and new scientific discoveries and innovations, according to the PharmaTimes.
According to the study, the private sector played a pivotal role in the discovery or development of virtually all the drugs studied. The study literature contained the summary case histories of 35 drugs and drug classes that were identified as the most prescribed in 2007.
Of the 35 drugs and classes studied, the study found that private-sector research was responsible for central advances in basic science for seven, in applied science for 34 and in the development of drugs yielding improved clinical performance or manufacturing processes for 28.
The study also highlighted the private-sector's role in the development of modern drugs for bacterial infections, hypertension and anemia drugs like Amgen's Epogen.
