Canadian Dermatology Association (CDA) Announces the 2008 Award Winners
OTTAWA, ONTARIO–(Marketwire – July 2, 2008) – The Canadian Dermatology Association announced the 2008 award winners at the President’s Banquet held during the 83rd Annual Conference in Montreal on July 1, 2008. The CDA honoured eight winners in the media, industry, not for profit, volunteer and research categories for excellence in the advancement of public education and the science and art of medicine and surgery related to the health of the skin, hair and nails.
The distinguished President’s Cup award is given by the CDA president to a CDA member dermatologist who has been of particular assistance to the president and/or the association over the past year and who the president feels has made a significant contribution to the Association. The 2008 President’s Cup was presented to Dr. Alfred Balbul, of Montreal for his immense contribution to CDA’s Sun Protection Evaluation Program.
Recipients of the Award of Merit exemplify excellence of leadership and contributions made to the Canadian Dermatology Association over many years for work in clinical and research activities, teaching, organizational and administrative ability, and community services. This year’s recipient of the Award of Merit is Dr. Bernice Krafchik of Toronto for being a national and international voice for pediatric dermatology and for developing programs that have enhanced the health of children with skin disease.
The CDA Young Dermatologists’ Volunteer Award recognizes outstanding volunteer medical and dermatologic services to the community by young Canadian dermatologists who are in private practice. The Young Dermatologists’ Volunteer Award went to Dr. Ian Landells, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics in the faculty of Medicine at Memorial University, for his many professional and public community services to the people of St. John’s, Newfoundland, and Canada.

Not for Profit Public Education Award: April Grenon, Sudbury & District Health Unit for the “Sun Hats for Kids” Campaign.
Not for Profit Public Education Award: Irene Rutherford, Durham Region Health Department for the “Save the Skin You’re In…Take Care…Take Cover” Program.
Industry Public Education Award: Diane Laberge of Unilever Canada for the Dove Skin Care Series.
Barney Usher Research in Dermatology Award: Thusanth Thuraisingam, PhD, a first year medical student at the University of Montreal for the studies of the mechanism of wound healing.
