Cape Fear Valley, St. Pauls Clinic Seek Linear Accelerator

July 3, 2008

By The Fayetteville Observer, N.C.

Jul. 3–Cape Fear Valley Health System is competing with The Radiation Medical Center in Robeson County to acquire a linear accelerator.

The two health care companies have filed a certificate of need with the state for permission to obtain the equipment, according to a notice sent out by the state Tuesday.

Linear accelerators are used in radiation treatments for people suffering from cancer.

The state previously identified a need for an additional linear accelerator in the region that includes Cumberland, Bladen, Robeson and Sampson counties, the notice said.

A public hearing on the matter is scheduled for Aug. 18 at the Municipal Building Courtroom, 210 W. Blue St. in St. Pauls.

According to the notice, Cape Fear Valley Health System officials would like to retain the health system’s current linear accelerator, which had been scheduled for removal with the acquirement of a new CyberKnife.

The CyberKnife is a robotic tool that uses radiation to destroy tumors and perform operations without surgery. The CyberKnife is expected to be in operation in the spring.

The Radiation Medical Center wants to acquire a linear accelerator and a treatment simulator and establish a $7.4 million outpatient radiation therapy treatment center at 2180 N.C. 20 in St. Pauls, the notice said.

Anyone may file written comments concerning these proposals. Comments must be received by the state’s Certificate of Need section no later than July 31 at the following address:

Certificate of Need Section, Division of Health Service Regulation, 2704 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-2704.
