Community Plans to Celebrate Fourth With a Bang

These July 4th events are planned:
* The Lake Wylie Community Fourth of July fireworks display will be at dusk, approximately 9:45 p.m., on Friday at Lake Wylie by the Buster Boyd Bridge, S.C. 49 at Lake Wylie. The best viewing sites are the Buster Boyd Bridge Boat Landing, T-Bones on the Lake’s outside deck, the Rey Azteca deck at Lake Wylie Plaza and the patio of Lake Wylie Italian and Pizza at Lake Wylie Plaza.
* The annual July 4th firing of the cannon and Independence Day Celebration will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Historic Band Stand in Confederate Park, downtown Fort Mill. Guest speaker will be U.S. Rep. John M. Spratt. The event will feature patriotic music and Mike Short will fire the cannon in celebration of the nation’s 232nd birthday. The event is free and open to the public. For details call 547-2116. The Town of Fort Mill is sponsoring the event.
* Celebrate American Independence at Historic Brattonsville will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at 1444 Brattonsville Road, McConnells. Honor the nation’s birth 1840s style with games, cooking demonstrations, musket firings, children’s military drills and a reading of the Declaration of Independence. Admission is $6 adults; $5 seniors; $3 youth ages 4 to 17; and free for CHM members and children 3 and younger. For details, call 684-2327.
* The McCelvey Center July 4th celebration will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday at 212 E. Jefferson St., York. The event will feature patriotic music, the Pledge of Allegiance and posting of the colors. Bobby Plair Jr. will play the National Anthem on trumpet. The event is free and open to the public. Food and children’s activities are available at an additional cost.
* Good Samaritan United Methodist Church will have a July 4th celebration at 7 p.m. Saturday at the church, 5220 Crowders Cove Lane, Lake Wylie. Activities include fellowship and karaoke. The event is open to the public.
* The Tega Cay Lions Club will have its annual fish fry from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Phillip Glennon Community Center in Tega Cay. The menu choices will include flounder or chicken fingers with baked beans, potato salad, hush puppies, slaw and iced tea. Cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children. Bruster’s Real Ice Cream will sell ice cream. Food is available for dine-in in the air- conditioned community center or take-out . Tickets may be purchased from any Tega Cay Lion or by calling 548-1648 or 548-3539. Following the fish fry, the city of Tega Cay will have its 26th anniversary party, a dedication of the Philip T. Glennon Community Center, the cutting of the birthday cake and fireworks.
* Quail Run Neighborhood off of Saluda Road in Rock Hill will have its Fourth of July parade at 10 a.m. Friday. Participants should line up at the Mallory Drive entrance at 9:30 a.m. The event is open to the public. For details, call Beth Cooper at 981-5185.
PRT taking reservationsfor October Vermont trip
The Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism’s Happy Travelers group is accepting reservations for the Vermont Culinary Masterpiece trip Oct. 16 through 21.
The trip includes maple tasting at Morse Sugar Farm, a “New England Cooks” interactive talk show, a visit to the Pulp Mill Double Covered Bridge, a tour of the Teddy Bear Factory and a tour of the Vermont Soap Co. It also include cheese tasting, sampling of fresh Green Mountain coffee, shopping at the Vermont Country store and evening entertainment. Cost is $845 per person. Adults of all ages are welcome and participants do not have to be a member.
Registration deadline is Aug. 1 and requires a $50 deposit. Registration and payment is taken at the PRT office at City Hall from 8 to 5 p.m. weekdays.

Fort Mill Playhouse to present ‘Pollyanna’
The Fort Mill Community Playhouse will have a youth production of “Pollyanna” at 7:30 p.m. July 10, 11 and 12 and 3 p.m. July 13 at the theater, 615 Banks St., Fort Mill.
Pollyanna, a young orphan, goes to live with her wealthy but harsh and stern Aunt Polly. Pollyanna uses her “Gladness Game,” taught to her by her father, to transform the dispirited New England town into a pleasant place to live. The show has a cast of more than 20 youth and is directed by Susan Windham Capotosto of Fort Mill.

Young Yorkville players will open shows in July
The Young Yorkville Players youth theater will present its production of “The Shakespeare Project” and “The Fifteen Minute Hamlet” at 8 p.m. July 18, 19, 25, 26 and at 3 p.m. July 20 and 27.
In “The Shakespeare Project,” adapted by James Zager, the most famous scenes and monologues are taken from a selection of Shakespearean works and presented in a contemporary style with new interpretations. In “Fifteen Minute Hamlet,” Tom Stoppard’s version takes the most famous and best- loved lines from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and condenses them into a hilarious 15-minute version.

Evangelistic event planned in lake Wylie
An evangelistic event for residents and neighbors of Lake Wylie’s Oakridge Community in Lake Wylie will be 4 to 8 p.m. July 12 in an open field along Oakridge Road. The event is coordinated by the Rev. Wanalyn Barnette, an associate minister of Liberty Hill A.M.E. Zion Church, Lake Wylie. The theme is REACH – Receive all into the family of God; Educate unbelievers in the way of the Lord; Always show love and compassion; Christ-like attitudes everywhere we go; and Help those in need.
The event is free and will include food, games, give-a-ways and crafts. Contributing sponsors are Carolina Panther Thomas Davis and Piedmont Medical Center.

Glencairn programs offered on Fridays
First Fridays in the Garden, a new educational series conducted by the York County Master Gardener Association, is offered at Glencairn Garden on the first Friday of each month.
This week is plant propagation, from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at the Glencairn Learning Center, 825 Edgemont Ave., Rock Hill. Classes will continue throughout the year.
No reservations are necessary and classes are free. Future topics include superb herbs, getting potted and introduction to container gardening. CHM events include tour, battle re-enactment
The Culture and Heritage Museums will have the following events:
* A tour of the archives, from 11 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the Historical Center of York County at McCelvey Center, 212 E. Jefferson St., York. Participants will look at how the archives stores records and resources donated from the public. The free public event is part of the ancestors and archives series. For details, call 684-3948.
* Battle of Huck’s Defeat, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 12 and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 13. Three significant battles of the Revolutionary War in the Carolina backcountry will be re-enacted. During the event, see how soldiers and civilians of the Carolina Piedmont survived the war. Activities include music, firearms demonstrations, talks by noted experts and examples of camp life. Youth can explore the children’s encampment area and play with historic toys and games, participate in military drills and take part in a Revolutionary War camp. Cost is $10 adults; $8 seniors; $5 youth ages 4 to 17; and free for children 3 and younger. CHM members will receive a $2 discount.
Reading program events include stories, theater

* Toddler time, for ages 24 to 35 months, 10 to 11 a.m. Thursdays at the Fort Mill Public Library. A weekly story time with songs, finger plays and movement activities for toddlers and their parent or caregiver.
* Rags to Riches Theatre presents “Bug Juice,” 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. July 8 at the Fort Mill Public Library; 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m. July 9 at the York County Library; 10:30 a.m. July 10 at the Clover Public Library; 2:30 and 4 p .m. Radio society has July 10 skywarn training
The York County Amateur Radio Society will have a Skywarn Class at 7:30 p.m. July 10 at the meeting house, 2129 Squire Road, Rock Hill. The class is free and open to the public. * Applications are being accepted for the Rock Hill Youth Council’s 2008-2009 school year. Eligible students must be a rising freshman, sophomore, junior or senior. Positions are available for students who attend Northwestern and South Pointe high schools and Westminister Catawba Christian or Trinity Christian schoosl.
Council members address youth issues in the Rock Hill area. Over the past year, the council has administered a grant program, coordinated Rock Hill Youth Service Day, coordinated a youth forum and served as a voice for other youth related issues.

Local crochet group will gather Saturday
Carolinas Chain Gang, a chapter of the Crochet Guild of America, will meet from 10 a.m. until noon Saturday at the Fort Mill Library, 1818 Second Baxter Crossing, Fort Mill. The group will continue its class on Tunisian crochet, focusing on color changes. Prior crochet experience is not needed.
