Ameritox, Ltd., Announces Addition of LC-MS/MS – the Industry’s Most Advanced Analytical Method for Detecting Prescription Pain Medications
Ameritox, Ltd., the U.S. leader in pain prescription urine drug monitoring, today announced its addition of the industry's most advanced, most sensitive analytical method for detecting prescription pain medications: multiplexing liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Ameritox has implemented the Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum Access(TM) triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with the Aria(TM) TLX-4 multiplexing system to analyze fentanyl and opiates, and will soon add benzodiazepines. The TurboFlow(TM) technology in the Aria TLX-4 greatly reduces specimen preparation time when compared to standard LC-MS/MS systems. By installing this Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum Access and Aria TLX-4 analytical system, Ameritox remains the industry leader in being able to offer the most sensitive analyses and rapid turnaround times.
"We are very pleased to be among the first pain medication monitoring laboratories to invest in this advanced LC/MS-MS multiplexing technology," says Dr. James Bourland, laboratory director at Ameritox. "By converting two high-volume confirmations from GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry) to multiplexing LC-MS/MS, Ameritox is able to provide even faster turn-around times as well as the most accurate and reliable analytical results to physician practices, which helps them provide better patient care."
Ameritox customer Dr. Hammam Akbik, University Pointe Pain Management Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, is equally delighted. "Knowing that Ameritox has invested in this advanced, highly sensitive, and fast analytical technology gives us even more confidence that we made the right choice in Ameritox RxGuardian(SM). Ameritox continually leads the way when it comes to helping our practice manage pain medication patients."
The multiplex design of the Thermo Scientific Aria TLX-4 coupled with the TSQ Quantum Access makes this more than just a standard LC tandem mass spectrometer. With four injection ports and two injectors, the TLX-4 multiplexing system results in specimen throughput up to four times more efficient than similar systems using standard autosamplers. In addition, the TurboFlow technology provides online extraction of the specimen, which greatly reduces time-consuming specimen preparation procedures, thereby reducing a potential source of human error.
Tandem mass spectrometry is an advanced technology used to analyze very low drug concentrations, down to the picogram level, even in difficult matrices. Combining LC with tandem MS eliminates the need for derivatization of specimens, further increasing analytical speed. For some drugs and metabolites, the LC-MS/MS methodology is the best, most sensitive, most specific analysis. Combining the method with multiplexing and TurboFlow technology makes the Aria TLX-4 instrument particularly valuable.
"GC/MS and LC-MS/MS are complementary technologies with different roles in clinical toxicology analyses," comments Jeff Zonderman, director of LC-MS clinical toxicology solutions at Thermo Fisher Scientific. "For Ameritox, we were pleased to recommend the TSQ Quantum Access and the Aria TLX-4 with multiplexing and TurboFlow technology as a solution that not only improves analytical specificity and sensitivity, but also provides greater processing efficiencies." Thermo Scientific offers a range of high-end analytical instruments, laboratory equipment, software, services, consumables and reagents that enable integrated laboratory workflow solutions. Thermo Scientific is part of Thermo Fisher Scientific.
