Health Chief Resigns to Take on New Role

SCOTLAND’S deputy chief medical officer has resigned and will move to St Andrews University to lead research into national violence reduction strategies.

Professor Peter Donnelly, who will take up his post as professor in public health medicine in September, said: “I am delighted to be joining a strong team at a very exciting time of development. I am honoured to be given the opportunity ” Dean of medicine Professor Hugh MacDougall said: “Peter Donnelly is a major addition to our teaching and research staff and we expect that his work here will offer fresh insights into a number of complex public health issues.”

Professor Donnelly graduated in medicine at Edinburgh University in 1985, followed by postgraduate studies in public health and management at the University of Wales, Stirling and Harvard universities, and at Edinburgh where he is an honorary professor of public health.

He has been president of the UK Association of Directors of Public Health and vice-president of the Faculty of Public Health. He is on the steering committee of the Reforming States Group, a US organisation of senior politicians and policy makers.
