Storm Causes Major Power Outages

Jul. 8–Nearly 5,600 Indiana & Michigan Power customers were still without power at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday hours after a storm with high winds came through the Fort Wayne area. Tornado sirens went off throughout the county around 1:30 p.m. during the storm’s high winds. Problems reported: *The largest number of power outages is in the Trier-Wallen-Walden roads area, said Suzanne Moorman Rowe, I&M spokeswoman, soon after the storm. Crews were en route. The number of customers without power had reached more than 6,400 midafternoon. * Coldwater and Wallen roads had a transformer on fire, but Rowe was uncertain about the causes of the outages until crews were on site. *A downed power line caused a tree to catch on fire at the Diebold and Union Chapel roads area. *The Fort Wayne Fire Department’s scuba team was responding to a report of a possible drowning with a car in water. *A person was reportedly pinned in a vehicle in a ditch surrounded by water at 7950 W. Jefferson Blvd. in front of Lutheran Hospital. Rescue crews arrived 2:10 p.m. to find the man, whose car was actually in the grassy median, was OK. *A fire at 606 Locust could have been caused by lightning. Fire crews were on the scene around 2 p.m. *As of 3 p.m., the Fort Wayne Parks Department had reports of eight downed trees blocking streets. They include: Kirkwood, Washington Center Road at Coldwater Road, Wheelock Road and St. Joe Drive; and Riverforest Drive. *As of 4:30 p.m., the city of Fort Wayne was reporting these signal outages. Temporary stop signs have been installed: Coldwater and Wallen Coldwater and Riley Stellhorn and Maplecrest Stellhorn and Northwood Maplecrest and Trier Maplecrest and Northwood Lumbard and New Haven U.S. 27 S and Patriot Crossing ( Southtown Centre) ( no stops to this yet) Signals on flash: Airport Expressway & Winchester *Signals the city doesn’t maintain on Lima Road north of Sam’s Club are also out.
