Hospital Pays $9.75 Million for Injury

The attorney for a woman whose daughter suffered a severe brain injury at birth says Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital has agreed to pay $9.75 million.
Rosa Lopez of suburban Westmont, Ill., charged her daughter Madeleine, now 10, suffered oxygen deprivation because doctors were too aggressive in inducing labor, The Chicago Sun-Times reported Wednesday.
Lopez was a week beyond her due date when she was given the drug Pitocin.
Attorney Kevin Burke said the doctors at Northwestern Memorial failed to notice that the strong contractions the drug produced put too much stress on the baby, depriving it of oxygen.
The worst part of this, of course, is her not really being able to realize for herself in her life what she could have, said Lopez.
The original lawsuit, filed in 2004, named five doctors, the hospital and the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation.
Burke said the five doctors were dropped from the case and the settlement was with the hospital and the physicians' group.
