Posted on: Wednesday, 9 July 2008, 12:00 CDT

Walgreens, a drugstore chain, has announced that Maricopa County, Arizona, was able to reduce its per member prescription medication cost in 2007 by 2.44% compared to 2006, with Walgreens Health Initiatives' cost-containment strategies.

Walgreens Health Initiatives programs that helped achieve Maricopa County's results include: a 90-Day fill option, which allows members to obtain up to a 90-day supply of medications either by mail or through more than 39,000 retail network pharmacies that are part of the Advantage90 program.

Richard Ashworth, executive vice president of Walgreens Health Initiatives, said: "We're proud of our ability to successfully balance plan savings with member care and satisfaction, not only for Maricopa County, but for more than nine million covered lives nationwide."
