Kansas Health Consumer Coalition Developing Consumer-Based Organization Focused on Health Care Issues in Kansas

The Kansas Health Consumer Coalition (KHCC), which began in the early part of 2004, is being launched by a group of health care consumers from varying backgrounds and interest. The intention among participants is to build common purpose and action among diverse groups and to give them a voice on issues of health care access. Kansas Health Consumer Coalition will advocate expansion of access to affordable and quality health care for every person in Kansas. Although KHCC is in the early stages of development, the organization plans to work diligently to create a statewide network of consumers interested in health care issues, to provide consumers an opportunity to interact with policy makers, and to help policy makers become aware of consumer concerns regarding healthcare.
Health consumer advocacy organizations have been sprouting up in different states throughout the country. States such as California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Nebraska, New Jersey, and Texas have successfully created active consumer advocacy organizations to focus on health care issues. Although each organization's focus is specific to their state and constituents, each has had an essential role in educating the public and policy makers regarding the gaps between needed access and affordable health care.
Note: KSNA & KAMU in 2003/2004 through their respective Executive Directors Terri Roberts, RN, JD and Joyce Volmut, MSN. RN were instrumental in the formation of this new consumer organization. Joyce Volmut now serves on the Steering Committee.
