U.S. News Media Group’s 2008 America’s Best Hospitals Lists USC University Hospital and USC/Norris Cancer Hospital Among the Top Hospitals in the Nation

July 11, 2008

Three programs at USC University Hospital and one at USC/Norris Cancer Hospital are considered among the best in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report’s 18th annual “America’s Best Hospitals” rankings accessible today online at www.usnews.com/besthospitals and on sale at newsstands Monday, July 14.

USC University Hospital ranked 45th in gynecology, 49th in neurology and neurosurgery, and 7th in ophthalmology (The Doheny Eye Institute). USC/Norris ranked 45th in Cancer, the first time the hospital has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report.

Authoritative and influential, the 2008 America’s Best Hospitals guide ranks 170 medical centers nationwide in 16 specialties–with full data available online for another 1,500 that are unranked. In addition, the Honor Roll singles out the “best of the best.”

The 16 ranked specialties are cancer; gastroenterology; ear, nose, and throat; endocrinology; geriatric care; gynecology; heart and heart surgery; kidney disease; neurology and neurosurgery; ophthalmology; orthopedics; psychiatry; rehabilitation; respiratory disorders; rheumatology; and urology.

To be eligible for ranking in 12 of 17 specialties, a hospital had to be at least one of the three: affiliated with a medical school, a member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals, or achieve a minimum score measuring available hospital technology. Only 176 hospitals out of 6,007 U.S. medical centers scored high enough to rank in a specialty.

“These rankings were based on a number of factors that look at data to determine reputation, mortality rates and care-related factors such as nursing and the availability of advanced services. Our hospitals have worked hard to ensure that our patients receive the best possible care using evidenced-based medicine designed to improve outcomes,” said Debbie Walsh, President and Chief Executive Officer of USC University Hospital and USC/Norris Cancer Hospital. “We are very proud of the hard work and dedication that our medical staff and employees display each day as they care for our patients.”

Brian Kelly, editor of U.S. News & World Report, said, The America’s Best Hospitals rankings provide readers with trusted material during some of life’s most concerning times – hospitalization. “Our rankings highlight the internal culture of excellence embraced by caregivers in the great hospitals throughout the U.S.”

“Talent and money alone don’t put hospitals in the rankings,” agreed Best Hospitals editor Avery Comarow. “The truly best hospitals are never satisfied,” he said. “Of course they have high medical standards. But the emphasis is not only on doing well, but always doing better–squeezing another few percentage points out of the infection rate, improving the quality of life of elderly patients besides helping more of them survive.”
