Madonna Hospital Raises $6 Million

By Michael O'Connor, Omaha World-Herald, Neb.

Jul. 13--Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital is edging closer to its goal of raising $8.5 million for renovations and other improvements.

It is the biggest capital campaign in the Lincoln hospital's 50-year history.

The hospital has raised $6 million so far and hopes to reach its goal in the next six to 10 months, said Molly Nance, director of strategic planning and marketing. The funding comes from corporate and individual donations.

More than 100 patient rooms will be remodeled with new paint, flooring, flat-screen TVs and wireless Internet.

Part of the money raised will be used for research to develop electronic sensors that would enable patients to turn the TV and lights on and off in their rooms by blinking their eyes.

The hospital serves children and adults with a range of problems including brain and spinal injuries. The hospital draws patients from across Nebraska and the country.

The hospital already has an area called Independence Square that has a car, farm equipment and even theater seats where patients can practice skills they will need when they return home or to work.

That space will be expanded and updated and will include new shopping, theater and gardening areas.

Madonna also will expand the kitchen that patients use to practice cooking and other household skills, and will enlarge the gym to provide more room for therapeutic exercises and equipment.

The cafeteria will be renovated. One area will be a '50s-style diner, and another will resemble an outdoor patio.

The hospital will get new computer equipment that will enable it to convert to an electronic medical records system. The system will make it easier for the hospital to share test results and other information with other hospitals and physicians.
