Find Your Calling at Soul Purpose Day in Wilton Manors

July 16, 2008

By Nick Sortal, South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Jul. 16–Some people focus on making themselves better.

Some on making the world around them better.

For the person with an interest in both, there’s Soul Purpose Day on July 25.

The event, at the Center for Spiritual Living in Wilton Manors, will combine lectures, New Age spirituality activities and a “soul retrieval” meditative dance.

“We’re hoping to give people skills, tools and strategies for feeling better about themselves, stretching their mind in a different way,” event organizer Laura Finley said. “Or, if they’ve already stretched their mind, they can reinvigorate their passion.”

It mimics programs Finley has overseen since she created the Center for Living and Teaching Peace in Plantation. She started the center in January to expand on her previous work, as employee training coordinator at Women In Distress of Broward County. She is a professor of sociology and criminology at Barry University.

One goal of Soul Purpose Day is for people to connect the piece of their makeup that helps others with the piece that helps themselves, she said.

“You can be a better activist if you have an awareness of being healthy and well,” she said.

The event is divided in two:

Teaching peace

Joe Schillaci, from the A&E show The First 48: Unconditional love and becoming more aware of the damage of “verbal violence.”

Robin Rose, executive director for OneCommUnity (formerly the National Conference for Community and Justice, or NCCJ): Cultural diversity.

Dawn Roth, parenting coach: Power struggles between parents and children and how to manage them.

Janalie Bingham of Global Handcrafters, which imports crafts from developing countries: Buying fair-trade items and how to be conscious in your consumption.

Living peace

A discussion of the CD The Chocolate Meditation, which uses the metaphors of chocolate “to provide all the teachings one could ever need in order to discover the inner peace that life inherently provides,” according to creators Matt Kahn and Julie Dittmar.

Roberto Suarez, life coach: How to quiet your mind and elevate your clarity, peace and balance.

Eileen Gottlieb, nurse and vibrational healing expert: Being heart-connected.

Stella Vargas, Reiki master: The role of self-worth in healing.

Melinda Freiman, spirit dancer, and drummer George Xavier Love: Earth Transcen’dance, a guided meditative dance designed to release stored-up emotions.
