Posted on: Wednesday, 4 May 2005, 09:00 CDT

PHILADELPHIA, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- A panel of the nation's most prominent public health leaders will convene at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (USP) to consider the future of public health in America. "The Future of Public Health -- What Will It Take to Keep Americans Healthy and Safe?" will be held from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10, in USP's Griffith Hall, located at 600 South 43rd Street, Philadelphia, Pa. As a follow-up to its successful, groundbreaking symposia on The Future of Medicare and The Future of Medicaid, held in 2003 and 2004 respectively, this symposium will address challenges facing public health in America and seek strategies for improving the system. The event is free and open to the public. Members of the media will be able to ask questions during a special Q&A session following the symposium. For more information, visit http://www.usip.edu/symposium or contact John M. Martino at (215) 895-1186 or email j.martin@usip.edu.

The event brings together three nationally recognized experts, all of whom have run major federal public health agencies, and a distinguished moderator. They are:

Johns Hopkins School of Public Health

Jeffrey P. Koplan, MD, MPH

Emory University

James S. Marks, MD, MPH

Public health today is a complex national concern. Some of the key questions about the current and future state of public health that the panelists will address include:

* What is the optimal relationship between the federal government and

state and local health agencies?

* How can we build and sustain public support for a strong public health

system?

* How should public health intersect with the medical care system?

* What key regulatory changes would support a stronger public health

system?

* What technologies and human resources are most needed to strengthen

public health capabilities?

The symposium is presented by the Health Policy Program at USP and sponsored by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.
