Obesity is associated with multiple co-morbidities, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), asthma, and depression. These co-morbidities are responsible for more than 2.5 million deaths per year worldwide. Surgical weight loss has been shown to improve if not resolve many of these co-morbidities.
