Donedei Wines to Host Charitable Event for Robotic-Assisted Prostate Cancer Surgery
Posted on: Thursday, 17 July 2008, 12:01 CDT
One in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime, according to the National Cancer Institute. When Fred Goldberg, co-founder of Donedei Wines, www.donedei.com, was diagnosed with prostate cancer, he became one of the fortunate Washington state patients to benefit from the da Vinci Surgical System, which -- under the control of an experienced urologic surgeon -- uses finely controlled robotic instruments to remove the cancer more safely, while speeding patient recovery.
On Tuesday, July 29 from 6-8 p.m., Fred and his wife, Donedei's award-winning winemaker and co-founder Carolyn Lakewold, will host Swedish Medical Center's Robotic Surgery Program at their Olympia winery. The charitable event will feature renowned laparoscopic surgeon James Porter, M.D. Dr. Porter will be giving a hands-on demonstration of the da Vinci Surgical System and guests will have a chance to 'test-drive' the machine.
This charitable event is designed to introduce former, current and prospective patients and doctors in the Puget Sound region to the da Vinci Surgical System and to celebrate advances in prostate-cancer treatment. Dr. Porter will be talking candidly about the da Vinci Surgical System, the popularity of this treatment option and its growth throughout the region. He will also be discussing case-study examples of how the system has helped cancer patients' lives and medical advances related to the system.
Additionally, attendees will have the chance to talk with Donedei Wines Co-Founders Fred Goldberg and Carolyn Lakewold. Goldberg will share personal experiences with prostate cancer and how the da Vinci Surgical System and Dr. Porter helped him through the process.
This event is one of many charitable events that Donedei will be hosting this year.
