Dave Hennekens, Jump-Roper
Posted on: Friday, 6 May 2005, 03:00 CDT
Age: 52
Height: 5 feet, 9 inches
Weight: 185 pounds, "well toned," he said
Home town: Colorado Springs
Occupation: Financial adviser at Strategic Financial Partners
Q: How has jumping rope benefited you?
A: My sleeping pulse is in the 30s. I have the ability to go out and ski or bicycle, and I do not get stiff and sore. Being able to do that motivates me to stay in shape.
Q: How often do you jump?
A: I average five mornings a week on the jump-rope.
I jump approximately 17-18 minutes for 2,500 revolutions, and I mentally count each rep. It's mental discipline for thinking under exertion.
Q: What other exercises do you incorporate in your program?
A: Push-ups and sit-ups on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I ski, bicycle and hike, too, but those are enjoyable things.
But the basics are jump-rope, 180 push-ups and 120 sit-ups those (three) days. I do them in three sets of 60 push-ups and two sets of 60 sit-ups, and I can do those very, very easily. I used to do sets of 100, but in my mid 40s I cut back a little bit.
Q: Have you always been this much into exercising?
A: I started in 1974. I grew up on a farm, so I was pretty well muscled when I was 15 years old. And now I weigh within 12 pounds of what I weighed 37 years ago.
But the desk job is making me worry about it a bit more. (Laughing)
Q: Has your attitude toward fitness changed in the past 20-30 years?
A: My first motivating factor was in 1974-75, when I started on the police force.
My sergeant said to me, "Hennekens, you'll have a fat (behind) like us in six months. Just wait."
That started it. I've always wanted to stay healthy.
My wife says I'm addicted to it. But if that's my addiction, so be it.
