New Jersey women this week can take advantage of free screenings for heart disease, breast cancer and other ailments at health centers throughout the state.
The campaign, part of National Women's Health Week, is intended to raise awareness about the high rates of HIV and AIDS, diabetes, stroke, breast and lung cancer and cardiovascular disease.
About half the state's so-called "federally qualified health centers" will offer the screenings through Friday.
The health centers have provided care for the underinsured and uninsured for more than 40 years. More than 289,000 New Jerseyans last year were treated at the state's 20 qualified health centers.
Among the screenings are those scheduled at the North Hudson Community Action Corp.'s locations in West New York and Union City:
*-Today and Wednesday: cardiovascular screenings and education.
*-Tuesday and Thursday: breast self-exams.
*-Friday: bone-density screenings and education.

Also, state officials and community leaders will be honored for supporting women's health initiatives.
Secretary of State Regena L. Thomas will be a keynote speaker Wednesday at a breakfast in Trenton sponsored by the New Jersey Primary Care Association, a non-profit corporation that acts as a liaison between the health centers and federal agencies.
Other honorees will include Assemblywoman Loretta Weinberg, D- Teaneck, and Susan Bass Levin, commissioner of the state Department of Community Affairs.
