Lance Armstrong and Four Former U.S. Surgeons General Issue National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship

National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship:
Who: Lance Armstrong, Founder and Chairman, Lance Armstrong Foundation (LAF) Richard H. Carmona, M.D., M.P.H., 17th United States Surgeon General (2002-2006) David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., 16th United States Surgeon General (1998-2002) Joycelyn Elders, M.D., M.S., 15th United States Surgeon General (1993-1994) Antonia C. Novello, M.D., M.P.H., Dr.Ph., 14th United States Surgeon General (1990-1993) What: At the request of LAF Chairman and Founder Lance Armstrong, four former United States Surgeons General collaborated with the cancer prevention and survivorship community to develop the National Call to Action on Cancer Prevention and Survivorship. At the press conference, these four most recent U.S. Surgeons General will outline the battle plan for the new war on cancer and the steps that Americans can take to reduce the risk of developing cancer and improve screening, early detection, treatment, and survivorship. Why: More than 1.4 million Americans are diagnosed with cancer each year, and cancer is now the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 85. Cancer is a public health crisis that carries with it an unsustainable societal and economic burden. Cancers that can be prevented or detected early account for at least half of all new cases. Engaging and empowering all Americans and our policymakers to embrace cancer prevention and survivorship as a national priority and to meet the goals outlined in this National Call to Action will save lives, save money, and improve the lives of the estimated 12 million Americans living today with cancer.
