Workers Denounce Sutter Health’s Disregard for Community Interests

SANTA ROSA, Calif., July 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is being issued by SEIU United Healthcare Workers - West:

Healthcare workers will picket outside Sutter Medical Center-Santa Rosa (SMCSR) to demonstrate their alarm at a growing healthcare crisis in Sonoma County that will see layoffs of hundreds of Sutter hospital workers next month. The announced elimination of 120 SMCSR workers would come just a few months after Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital eliminated more than 200 employees, and would further compromise Sonoma County residents' access to good jobs and quality health care. The decision to impose layoffs is disappointing because the company didn't even try to engage workers or the community in any effort to mitigate the layoffs' impact. This unilateral approach on such an important community issue, demonstrates clearly, Sutter Health's disregard for its obligation to provide quality healthcare services to Sonoma County residents.

SMCSR, a part of Sacramento-based Sutter Health, continues to be unaccountable neither to its employees nor to the community's interests. Given the company's significant profits, Sutter should immediately rescind these planned lay-offs and work with their employees and the community to accurately define the problem, and then work with all stakeholders to find a responsible solution.
