Be Prepared for Disasters

Jul. 31–Want to learn how to put out a fire, rescue your neighbor or prepare for a flood?
The Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department is looking for Elk Grove and Galt community members to train for future disasters.
Community Emergency Response Team classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 16 and Aug. 23, 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 21 and Aug. 28, with a final disaster training exercise from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 30.
Another class will be taught from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Oct. 2 through Nov. 13, with a final drill from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 15.
All classes will be held at the Cosumnes CSD Fire Training Facility at 19573 E. Stockton Blvd. in Elk Grove.
According to the Fire Department, if a disastrous event, such as a flood or a windstorm, overwhelms or delays the community’s professional emergency responders, CERT members will be able to use the skills they’ve learned to help save lives.
“In those initial hours of a mass disaster, it’s your neighbors and yourself that will be called to respond initially before emergency personnel can get there,” said Steve Capps, Fire Department spokesman. “It’s critical that people are trained.”
Class topics will include disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, fire safety, terrorism and disaster psychology.
Registration is required. Register by phone at (916) 405-5300, online at www.yourcsd.com or in person at the CSD parks administration office.
