Aug. 1--June jobs: Grand Forks' unemployment rate was 3.4 percent in June, up from 2.9 percent the month before and 3.2 percent in June 2007, according to figures released Thursday by Job Service North Dakota.

The Grand Forks metropolitan statistical area, which covers all of Grand Forks and Polk counties, jumped to 4.2 percent in June, up from 3.4 percent the month before and 3.9 percent in June 2007.

Grand Forks County's unemployment rate in June was 3.6 percent, up from 3.1 percent the month before and 3.3 percent in June 2007.

Smoke-free: Members of the Grand Forks Tobacco Free Coalition will be at Good Friends Bar and Cafe in Larimore, N.D., at 6:30 p.m. to present a certificate of excellence to owner Terry Trosen for his decision to go smoke-free. Good Friends Bar is located at 220 Towner Ave.

Naturalist programs: Weekend naturalist programs, best suited for children ages 5 to 12, will be offered at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 9 and 16 and at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Red River State Recreation Area in East Grand Forks.

Registration ends at 4 p.m. each Friday and is limited to 25 individuals. Call (218) 773-4950 for more information.

Farmers Markets: The Minnesota Department of Agriculture and Minnesota Farmers Market Association are naming Sunday through Aug. 9 as National Farmers Market Week.

There are farmers markets planned in Crookston: from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Labor Day at 201 N. Broadway, and from 4 to 7 p.m. Fridays through Labor Day and Saturdays through mid-October at 402 Fisher Ave.

Bemidji's Farmers Market is held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays, noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays at the Pamida parking lot, 200 S. Paul Bunyan Dr.

Grand Forks' Farmers Market runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays in Town Square downtown.

Emergency preparedness: The North Dakota Department of Health will hold a videoconference on emergency preparedness. The meeting can be viewed at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Grand Forks Health Department, 151 S. 4th St., Suite N301, Conference Room 1, Grand Forks, and on the second floor of the Ramsey County Courthouse, 524 Fourth Ave., Devils Lake.
