Ardenwood activities -- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Get close to the barnyard animals, pick ripe vegetables from the garden and create edible works of art, and learn how to make old-fashioned, cranked, ice cream at Ardenwood Historic Farm, 34600 Ardenwood Blvd., Fremont. National Night Out crime and drug prevention event -- 6 to 8 p.m. Neighborhoods in Fremont will join forces with thousands of other communities nationwide to participate in National Night Out, designed to strengthen neighborhood unity and heighten crime and drug prevention awareness. As part of the event, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 38801 Blacow Road in Fremont, is offering free hot dogs and other refreshments for all participants in National Night Out. WEDNESDAY, Aug. 6

Senior dance -- 1 to 3:30 p.m. Come dance to swing, rock, country, Latin and waltz music from the 1940s through the 1990s, played by Len Rogers and Company, at the Ruggieri Senior Center, 33997 Alvarado-Niles Road, Union City. Admission is $3. For more information, call 510-675-5495.

Luncheon and bingo -- Noon. Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Father Francisco de Lasuen, #1508 are having their annual salad luncheon and bingo at St. Joseph Church Hall (next to the Old Mission), 43148 Mission Blvd., Fremont. Great American eat right challenge -- 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bring the kids to the American Cancer Society Discovery Shop, at 40733 Chapel Way in Fremont, for a special program of stories, music and games promoting healthy eating. All cookbooks are $1 and $2. Donations and purchases support research and services for cancer patients. For more information, call 510-252-1540.

Connect @ the Library Computer Classes -- 2 to 3:30 p.m. "Introduction to Microsoft Word" is a hands-on instructional class for beginners on creating Word documents, checking spelling, changing text and saving documents. Obon Festival -- 7 p.m. Public is invited to enjoy Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church's annual Festival of Obon (Buddhist dance night for happiness). Buddhist dancing, Japanese foods and music, and Taiko drum performances. Food sales from 5 p.m. Bon dance at 7 p.m. The church is at 32875 Alvarado-Niles Road, Union City.
