Scout Learned Valuable Lesson on Bike Ride

Posted on: Thursday, 19 May 2005, 21:00 CDT

Last Saturday (May 7), my son had a 10-mile bike ride with the Boy Scouts at the Sale Barn in Bloomington.

I would like to thank some people and let others know some things. First, I would like to thank every Boy and Girl Scout for coming and helping out. The kids had fun and learned a lot from the people who came to help teach the kids.

Second, I would like to thank all the drivers who showed at least my son what road rage is. We had 10-20 bikes and a little red truck to help out, if needed, to pick up a Scout that may not make it, and he drove with his flashers on for safety.

I only saw one mile of the ride, but that was enough for me. A black SUV would honk his horn and beat on the steering wheel and drive 40 mph around them just to turn at the next coroner off Sale Barn Road.

And one time there were three cars that went by us on Sale Barn Road and almost had a very bad crash. One driver showed some patience and drove down the middle of the road and did not see a car coming on the other side of the road. Just inches and they could have had about three or four Scouts and three cars involved.

We teach our children to be patient, but we need to show them we can be patient. I'm glad my son got to see this so he knows what could happen when you don't care about others and safety.
