Aequitas Presents Findings for Myocardial Perfusion Imaging at International Conference for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research; Research and Analysis Firm Shows Improved Health Outcomes When Imaging Technique is Utilized

Posted on: Friday, 20 May 2005, 09:00 CDT

Aequitas, a highly-regarded strategic healthcare advisory firm, presented the results of their investigation on the use of non-invasive myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) for the detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) in asymptomatic patients with diabetes mellitus at the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) 10th Annual International Meeting in Washington DC, May 15-18, 2005.

The presentations were entitled:

-- EARLY DETECTION OF CVD BY MYOCARDIAL PERFUSION IMAGING IN ASYMPTOMATIC PATIENTS WITH DIABETES

-- COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF DETECTION OF CAD BY MYOCARDIAL PERFUSION IMAGING IN ASYMPTOMATIC PATIENTS WITH DIABETES

CAD is a frequent comorbidity in patients with diabetes. Unfortunately, the expression of chest pain is physiologically altered in these patients and they may have CAD without clinical symptoms.

Medical claims-based analyses completed by Aequitas showed the rate of cardiovascular disease events in sixty 53-year old males who were observed for 24 months was 4.5-times greater in patients where MPI had not been used for the evaluation of CAD but current management standards were otherwise followed. However, in a matched population who underwent an MPI study, over 25% of asymptomatic patients demonstrated abnormal MPI findings. Of those who did not undergo MPI, 15% experienced cardiac events including myocardial infarction, dysrhythmias, and heart failure during the 24-month observation interval.

"Used to assess both myocardial perfusion and function, MPI represents a technique for early detection of CAD in a vulnerable, high risk population," states Frank Papatheofanis, MD, MPH, PhD, President and CEO of Aequitas. "The rising number of patients with diabetes will also reflect a rise in associated morbidity. The cost savings associated with preventing versus treating these comorbidities will be significant in the years to come."
