Volunteers Needed for Emergency Disaster Relief Group

August 5, 2008

By Rhonda Simmons, Culpeper Star-Exponent, Va.

Aug. 5–A local organization needs volunteers to assist medical professionals in a community-wide effort during emergencies.

The Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster, a national agency including the local Eastern Piedmont VOAD, wants to train area volunteers how to support paid first responders in case of emergencies such as floods, fires and other natural disasters.

The Eastern Piedmont VOAD serves Culpeper, Fauquier, Orange, Madison and Rappahannock counties.

The public is invited to attend the agency’s quarterly meeting Thursday at noon at the Orange TRIAD office, 127 Belleview Ave. in Orange.

“I’ve seen many community responses to emergency situations,” said Felecia Chavez, outreach coordinator for the Red Cross. “It is far easier to deal with an emergency when each agency has a specific role to play. Coordination among organizations and volunteers makes things go so much smoother for those doing their jobs.”

Area VOAD members include the Red Cross, the Piedmont United Way, the Piedmont Volunteer Center, the Medical Reserve Corps, TRIAD, Aging Together, the Salvation Army, Crooked Run Baptist Church and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church.
