Donate School Supplies, Get Fit Free

Aug. 6–The Leesburg Regional Medical Center Wellness Center will waive all wellness program start-up fees and September membership dues for residents who donate new school supplies worth at least $15 before Aug. 31.
The donations will go to elementary-school students.
The Wellness Center is on LRMC’s north campus at 700 N. Palmetto St. Programs include exercise and fitness training, nutrition, personal training, group exercise, aquatics, massage therapy, wellness screenings and childhood-obesity prevention.

Back-to-school fair
The Yalaha Community Club and Yalaha Country Bakery will present a back-to-school fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the bakery, 8210 County Road 48.
The Lake County Health Department will offer free immunizations for students who are accompanied by a parent or guardian and who have their shot records. The Health Department also will have information about the Students Working Against Tobacco program.
The Sheriff’s Office Explorers will present the Ident-A-Kid child-identification program.
Members from Kids-In-Safety-Seats will sponsor a free child safety-seat inspection.
Information about KidCare health insurance for children also will be available.
Children in KidCare receive comprehensive health care, including doctor visits, checkups, shots, surgery, prescriptions, vision and hearing screenings, mental health and dental care.
Open house, orientation
*Lost Lake Elementary School, 1901 Johns Lake Road, Clermont, will have “Meet the Teacher” on Aug. 14 for pre-kindergartners, kindergartners and first-graders from 9 to 10 a.m.; second- and third-graders from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; and fourth- and fifth-graders from 1 to 2 p.m.

*Grassy Lake Elementary, 16300 Grassy Lake Road in Minneola, will have an open house Aug. 14 for kindergartners through second-graders from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and third- through fifth-graders from 1 to 2:30 p.m.
Parents who can’t attend may obtain the name of their child’s teacher by calling the office at 352-242-0313.
*East Ridge Middle School, 13201 Excalibur Road in Clermont, will have student orientation Aug. 14 for students whose last name begins with A through M from 10 a.m. to noon and for students whose last name begins with N through Z from 4 to 6 p.m.
The office is open for registration from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

*Umatilla Elementary, 401 Lake St., will have a pre-kindergarten orientation meeting at 6 p.m. Aug. 14. An open house is planned for all students from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Aug. 15.

*Mount Dora Middle, 1405 Lincoln Ave., will have its orientation Aug. 15.
A presentation for incoming sixth-graders and new students will begin at 9 a.m. in the cafeteria, and class schedules will be available until 11 a.m.
Returning students can pick up class schedules between 1 and 3 p.m.
Hot dogs, chips and soft drinks will be sold.
Parents of new students who haven’t registered should call the guidance office to schedule an appointment at 352-383-6815.
Safe Climate Coalition
The Safe Climate Coalition of Lake County will meet at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday at the Lake Technical Institute of Public Safety, 1565 Lane Park Cutoff, Tavares.
Phil Scarpelli with the Department of Children and Families will talk about “Child Abuse in Lake County: What’s Really Happening!”

Grant for music festival
The Community Foundation of South Lake County recently awarded Montverde Academy an arts and cultural grant to launch the Lake County Schools Music Festival, which will feature public and independent schools throughout the county.
The festival is scheduled for the spring in the academy’s fine arts center.
The foundation awards grants for education, youth and family, community development, health and wellness, and arts and culture.
