Arapahoe/Douglas Mental Health Network and Doctor's Care Partner to Bring Mental Health Services to Indigent Population

Posted on: Monday, 23 May 2005, 12:01 CDT

CENTENNIAL, Colo., May 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Arapahoe/Douglas Mental Health Network (ADMHN) and Doctor's Care recently announced a unique partnership intended to bring mental health services to medically indigent patients.

According to Scott Thoemke, ADMHN Chief Executive Officer, the mental health center will house a licensed therapist in the Doctor's Care clinic. In addition to providing the Doctor's Care staff with mental health consultations, the therapist will also provide direct care to indigent patients in need of mental health services.

"We're very excited about the opportunity to bring mental health services into a primary care setting," said Thoemke. "This should significantly improve access to mental health care for low income, uninsured residents of Littleton."

The concept of integrating medical and mental health services has risen to prominence on a state and national level. Studies show that 50 to 70 percent of the diagnosable mental health problems treated in the United States are seen only by primary care providers -- not by mental health professionals.

"Combining medical and mental health services addresses a wider spectrum of issues for our patient population for whom health care coverage is not available or unaffordable," said Bebe Kleinman, Executive Director of Doctor's Care. "We're ecstatic to be partnering with an organization of such vision."

This partnership is made possible through a $22,500 Community Development Block Grant from the City of Littleton.
