Summer Concerts Return Tonight to Fort Meade

Officials at Fort George G. Meade recently announced the return of the Army Field Band’s summer concerts. The popular concerts are open to the public for the first time since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

Both concerts will be performed rain or shine at the Fort Meade Pavilion.

The Jazz Ambassadors will perform at 7 p.m. tonight. The 19- member award-winning big band was formed in 1969. The group is entertains with a diverse repertoire of big band, swing, bebop, Latin, Dixieland, vocals and jazz.

The performance of the Army Field Band concert band and soldiers chorus at 7 p.m. Aug. 16 Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with complete with cannon fire.

The 65-member concert band, known as the musical ambassadors of the Army, is the oldest and largest of the field band’s four performing components. It was founded in 1946 and has performed in all the states and in 27 countries.

The Fort Meade Pavilion is located at the intersection of Route 175 and Llewellyn Avenue. There will be an electronic marquee in place to direct the public. Parking is free.

Bingo lunch

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8097, 7209 Montevideo Road in Jessup, will host a bingo lunch and bake sale Aug. 17.

Lunch will be served from noon to 1 p.m. with the bingo games starting at 1 p.m. The bake sale will run through the afternoon until items are sold out.

All proceeds will go to the VFW scholarship fund.

Vendors needed

The Jessup Improvement Association will sponsor its annual Jessup Day parade and vendor sale from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 27 at the community hall at the corner of Wigley Avenue and Route 175 in Jessup.

The parade will start at 1 p.m. Any group interested in entering the parade should contact Dot Scruggs at 410-799-9039.

Vendors can reserve a table for $15 by calling Dana Herbert at 410-796-7999.

Jessup Day is a community event that features children’s games, food, antique cars, a moon bounce, music and more.

Win a crab feast

Take a chance to win a summer crab feast and help the homeless of Sarah’s House, too.

Tickets are $1 each or $5 for six. Players must be 21 years or older.

The drawing will be held Aug. 20.

The winner of the feast will receive a bushel of steamed crabs, choice of a case of soda or beer, fresh local watermelon, paper products and mallets.

Sarah’s House is an emergency shelter for men, women and children at 2015 20th St., Fort George G. Meade.

Voicemaster club

The Voicemaster Toastmasters Club will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in the church hall of Metropolitan United Methodist Church, 548 Queenstown Road, Severn.

The Severn Improvement Association will hold its board of directors meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, then a general session meeting at 8 p.m. Both meetings will take place at the association building at 430 Queenstown Road.

ROWC trip

The Retired Officers’ Wives’ Club will host a trip to historic St. Michael’s on Sept. 23.

The cost for the trip is $80 and includes transportation, a guided tour, the cruise and lunch. There will be time for shopping, too.

Library events

The West County Area library, 1325 Annapolis Road, Odenton, will help parents and students alike with a workshop on “How to Buy a Personal Computer,” which will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

With school starting Aug. 25 many families are looking into the purchase of new personal computers. This workshop is designed to show buyers what to look for and what questions to ask when buying a Windows-based computer.

At the Provinces library, 2624 Annapolis Road, Severn, a special program for school-aged children titled “Act Like an Athlete” will honor favorite sports with stories, games and a snack. The program promises to be fun, especially since it coincides with the Summer Olympics.
